Is it time for something other than long lines, depressing news, angry voices, or crowded vacations? Then consider filling up your senses with the stunning sights, refreshing smells, and natural sounds of the pacific northwest in the comfort of your own personal cruise ship.

Having had the pleasure of exploring this part of the world by boat for several years now, as we are going to do again this summer with my sister and the family of our son Kent, we've always wondered if other friends and fellow retirees would welcome the opportunity to come along. Since we're constrained in how many of these cruises we can afford, would others - with knowledge of the uniqueness of the experience - be interested enough to share the costs? If so, we could arrange for a  yacht with an experienced captain (that would be me) for the cost of a standard bareboat charter. This could include the experience of joining an Alaskan Flotilla with five or six other boats for a truly remote cruise of the glaciers and back waters of Alaska and the Inside Passage.

Some of the best cruising in the world can be had in the islands of the Northwest, both in the U.S. and Canada. An archipelago between Washington State and Canada's Vancouver Island, and divided by Wilhelm I of Germany in arbitration of a border dispute between the U.S. and the U.K. in 1872, established the  San Juan  islands as part of the U.S.,  and the  Gulf Islands  as part of Canada. Separated by the relatively narrow Haro Strait, a common cruising ground for Orca whales, both sets of islands offer a host of serene anchorages, buzzing marina's and resorts, wildlife refuges, and marine parks. The Inside Passage and Alaska Flotilla

NW Explorations, the charter masters of the yachts we use, coordinate a "flotilla" of six boats for a voyage to Alaska, offering a couple of opportunities for a most extraordinary adventure. One is  a two week group voyage up the inside passage to Desolation Sound and the Discovery Islands. The other cruises along the southeast Alaskan coast. Both are 12 days and about 400 miles long The flotilla is escorted by a lead boat - skippered by a U.S. Coast Guard licensed captain - with a trained marine technician and a certified naturalist on board. This assures a trouble free, safe, yet stimulating adventure in remote waters. A diagrams at the bottom of this posting show the itinerary for each available leg.
